Final Third: The Last Word on our Football Heroes serves up another batch of funny, absurd and jaw-dropping tales discovered within more than 300 footballer autobiographies. Author John Smith has pored over the memoirs of the great and the good - as well as the not so good - so you don't have to. You're welcome. Final Third paints an intimate picture of our favourite football figures, using their own stories to show what makes them tick, what unites and divides them and exactly what they are prepared to share with us. They've seen things you wouldn't believe! The eye-opening stories include a defender deliberately driving a golf ball into Jimmy Hill's house, a goalkeeper confronted by a witch doctor in his penalty area, one football legend asking another to scale a church tower to stop the bells ringing, a manager who was like catnip to the wives of his directors and the England captain who drifted down the Thames. It all adds up to a fun third volume of the definitive digest of the autobiographies of our football heroes.

This guidebook, Via Ferratas of the Italian Dolomites Volume 2, is the second in a series of two published by Cicerone Press, which now fully replaces the previous Cicerone guidebook, Scrambles in the Dolomites, adding many new routes through the southern, Brenta and Lake Garda areas.Volume two documents southern Dolomites Via Ferrata routes in the major mountain ranges of Civetta, Schiara and Pala as well as those to the west in the Brenta. A significant addition (and, as far as we are aware, not previously published in any English-language guidebook) is the inclusion of routes around the northern end of Lake Garda and the Piccole Dolomites north of Vicenza. Here the mountains are generally lower and you can enjoy ferrata climbing over a much extended season, with some routes accessible for most of the year. While volume one covered the eastern, northern and central areas of the Dolomites, book two completes the picture, focusing on the southern, Brenta and Lake Garda areas.

Intelligent Faith - A celebration of Darwinian evolution (Paperback): John Quenby, John Smith Intelligent Faith - A celebration of Darwinian evolution (Paperback)
John Quenby, John Smith
R555 Discovery Miles 5 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The year 2009 is the Anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin and the 150th publication of his book on "The Origin of Species". The ideas which Darwin stimulated lie at the heart of our understanding of the natural world. They offer and elegant scientific account which elicits a positive response from and gives much to theology. Yet in recent years the Intelligent Design movement amongst creationists in the United States in opposition, not only to Darwinism, but also and consistently, to contemporary Western values and to mainstream liberal theology. It is now infiltrating the United Kingdom. In this book a group of scientists and theologians unite to honour Charles Darwin, expressing their common conviction that Darwinian evolution marks a very great advance in human understanding of the world and that Intelligent Design is an unproductive dead end. "Intelligent Faith" will be of interest not only to thinking people with an interest in theology and science but also to sixth formers, school discussion groups and university societies.

Evolutionary psychiatry attempts to explain and examine the development and prevalence of psychiatric disorders through the lens of evolutionary and adaptationist theories. In this edited volume, leading international evolutionary scholars present a variety of Darwinian perspectives that will encourage readers to consider 'why' as well as 'how' mental disorders arise. Using insights from comparative animal evolution, ethology, anthropology, culture, philosophy and other humanities, evolutionary thinking helps us to re-evaluate psychiatric epidemiology, genetics, biochemistry and psychology. It seeks explanations for persistent heritable traits shaped by selection and other evolutionary processes, and reviews traits and disorders using phylogenetic history and insights from the neurosciences as well as the effects of the modern environment. By bridging the gap between social and biological approaches to psychiatry, and encouraging bringing the evolutionary perspective into mainstream psychiatry, this book will help to inspire new avenues of research into the causation and treatment of mental disorders.

Proteinase and Peptidase Inhibition - Recent Potential Targets for Drug Development (Paperback): H. John Smith, Claire Simons Proteinase and Peptidase Inhibition - Recent Potential Targets for Drug Development (Paperback)
H. John Smith, Claire Simons
R1,829 Discovery Miles 18 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Cellular proteinases and their physiological role in normal and disease states have been the subject of great interest over recent decades. At present, specific protease inhibitors are exploited both as tools in unraveling the role of individual proteinases in particular cellular processes and for the development of chemotherapeutic agents for the treatment of various disorders. Proteinase and Peptidase Inhibition presents updated progress reports on the characterization of a wide range of cellular proteinases whose inhibitors may hold the key to the development of new drugs. Introductory chapters deal with the broad enzyme classes, inhibitor types and regulatory mechanisms governing proteinase activity. The target enzymes themselves, together with all aspects of their inhibition and inhibitor design, are comprehensively described. The classification of target enzymes by structural similarity, rather than by pharmacological effects, provides a new and coherent platform for understanding how inhibition of different targets can lead to the same therapeutic outcomes. This is a valuable reference book that will appeal to both academic and industrial researchers in the fields of medicinal chemistry, drug design and development, pharmacology, biochemistry, and molecular and cell biology.

Advances in knowledge and technology have revolutionized the process of drug development, making it possible to design drugs for a given target or disease. Building on the foundation laid by the previous three editions, Smith and Williams' Introduction to the Principles of Drug Design and Action, Fourth Edition includes the latest information on topics such as gene therapy, computer-aided design, and molecular techniques including proteomics. Using real-world examples that illustrate the principles of drug design, the author explores the discovery of lead compounds and their manipulation in the production of non-toxic, metabolically stable drug candidates that will interact with target receptors in a predicted fashion.

See what's new in the Fourth Edition:

Fully updates and expands the contents

Coverage of agonists and antagonists of neuro-transmitters

Information on the design of stable peptide-like drugs

The human genome and its impact on drug discovery anddevelopment

Advances in therapy and pharmacokinetics

Adopting a from-the-bench-to-the-marketplace approach, the book provides a thorough grounding in rational drug design. It emphasizes principles and elucidates a framework for basic drug design into which current and, more importantly, future drugs will fit.

Corruption in Urban Politics and Society, Britain 1780-1950 (Paperback): James R. Moore Corruption in Urban Politics and Society, Britain 1780-1950 (Paperback)
James R. Moore; John Smith
R1,562 Discovery Miles 15 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Despite much recent interest in the area of urban governance, little work has been done on the changing ethical standards of urban leaderships, 'governing' institutions or the policing of public life. Yet the issue of ethical standards in public life has become a central concern in contemporary public discourse; with issues of public probity, moral order and personal standards re-emerging as central features of political debate. This volume places these debates into their historical perspective by examining the linkages between processes of 'modernisation', urbanisation and the ethical standards of governance and public life. It considers how ethical debates arise as a result of differential access to positions of authority and from competition for public resources. The contributions are drawn from a wide range of scholarly and disciplinary backgrounds and provide a broad analysis of the phenomenon of corruption, assessing how debates about corruption arose, the narratives used to criticise established modes of public conduct and their consequences for urban leadership.

Bristol’S Buckingham, Brigand and Buckmaster (Paperback): Alex Crawford, John Smith Bristol’S Buckingham, Brigand and Buckmaster (Paperback)
Alex Crawford, John Smith
R607 Discovery Miles 6 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In late 1939, the Air Ministry were looking to replace the Blenheim as a medium bomber. Bristol Aircraft Company (BAC) initially came up with a bomber development of the Beaufighter, the Type 161. Due to specification changes and redesigns, the end result was the Type 163 Buckingham, a twin engined, twin tailed medium bomber. At the time of the Buckinghams conception inquiries were made about a torpedo bomber version. A redesign of the Buckingham brought about the Type 164 Brigand. The torpedo requirement was eventually dropped and the aircraft re-configures as a bomber. With no suitable trainers to train the Buckingham and Brigand pilots BAC came up with the Buckmaster, which was basically a Buckingham with a new nose section containing dual controls. By the time the Buckingham and Brigand entered service their roles had been superseded with newer and better aircraft. Most Buckinghams went straight into storage to await their fate, but some were converted in high speed courier aircraft with four seats. But it was too little too late. The Mosquito could do a better job at almost half the cost. The Brigand with its long range was earmarked for the Far East and the battle against Japan, but the war ended before they could be sent over. It was the Malaya Emergency that saved the Brigand. Carrying out a role for which it was never designed, that of a dive bomber, two Squadrons carried out over 3,500 against the Communist Terrorist. Had it not been for the constant delays and construction changes the aircraft may have lived up to their expectations. As it was they were plagued by mechanical and hydraulic issues as well as structural defects. After a number of catastrophic airframe failures the Brigands were retired from operational service in early 1953.

Winner of the first Paul A. Baran-Paul M. Sweezy Memorial Award for an original monograph concerned with the political economy of imperialism, John Smith's Imperialism in the TwentyFirst Century is a seminal examination of the relationship between the core capitalist countries and the rest of the world in the age of neoliberal globalization.Deploying a sophisticated Marxist methodology, Smith begins by tracing the production of certain iconic commodities-the Tshirt, the cup of coffee, and the iPhone-and demonstrates how these generate enormous outflows of money from the countries of the Global South to transnational corporations headquartered in the core capitalist nations of the Global North. From there, Smith draws on his empirical findings to powerfully theorize the current shape of imperialism. He argues that the core capitalist countries need no longer rely on military force and colonialism (although these still occur) but increasingly are able to extract profits from workers in the Global South through market mechanisms and, by aggressively favoring places with lower wages, the phenomenon of labor arbitrage. Meticulously researched and forcefully argued, Imperialism in the TwentyFirst Century is a major contribution to the theorization and critique of global capitalism.

Sociology and Human Ecology - Complexity and Post-Humanist Perspectives (Hardcover): John Smith, Chris Jenks Sociology and Human Ecology - Complexity and Post-Humanist Perspectives (Hardcover)
John Smith, Chris Jenks
R3,984 Discovery Miles 39 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Traditionally, Sociology has identified its subject matter as a distinct set - social phenomena - that can be taken as quite different and largely disconnected from potentially relevant disciplines such as Psychology, Economics or Planetary Ecology. Within Sociology and Human Ecology, Smith and Jenks argue that this position is no longer sustainable. Indeed, exhorting the reader to confront human ecology and its relation to the physical and biological environments, Smith and Jenks suggest that the development of understanding with regards to the position occupied by the social requires, in turn, an extension of the component disciplines and methodologies of a 'new' human socio-ecology. Aiming to evoke critical change to the possibility, status and range of the social sciences whilst also offering essential grounding for inter-disciplinary engagement, Sociology and Human Ecology will appeal to postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers interested in fields such as Social Theory, Socio-Biology and Ecological Economics.

The author of this 1755 work is unknown - John Smith may not even have been his real name - but internal evidence from the book suggests that he may have spent some time in northern Germany, and he also shows familiarity with aspects of French printing. Smith describes the typesetting of books but not the actual printing, so it is possible that he may have been a compositor or a printer's reader. The work is a comprehensive survey of all aspects of typecasting and composition, dealing with the formation of type, regular- and irregular-bodied letters, accents, kerning, upper and lower case, spacing, rules, braces and fleurons, and non-Roman fonts including Greek, Hebrew, black-letter, Old English, and Chinese, as well as mathematical and astronomical symbols and music. There are also sections on casting off copy, composing, imposing and correcting, giving a fascinating account of the eighteenth-century compositor's craft.
